All incoming students are appointed a tutor, who is a fellow student here at LUT. The tutor takes care of a group of students, so no worries if you do not know anyone when arriving, you will soon get to know your tutor group members! The tutoring starts when you arrive in Lappeenranta. Our LUT driver, who is a fellow student of LUT will meet you at your arrival (when arriving outside of Finland) and take you to your LOAS apartment, where your tutor will be waiting for you. The tutor will help you with practical matters in the beginning of your stay in Lappeenranta, as well as introduce you to the student life.
You will be sent your tutor's and drivers contact information by e-mail approximately one to two weeks before your arrival. As driver will have the key to your LOAS apartment, it is very important that you keep your driver and tutor updated on any changes to your arrival plan so that your driver and tutor knows when to expect you to arrive. Your tutor and driver will meet you only in Lappeenranta and only if you have confirmed your arrival.
Lappeenranta Student Housing Foundation (LOAS) will deliver your keys and tenancy agreements to the driver if your tenancy agreements starts before or upon your arrival. If your tenancy agreement starts later, you are required to collect the keys and sign the tenancy agreement at LOAS office.
The tutor will help you get familiarize yourself with your new surroundings at LUT, tell you more about studying here and how our systems work. In addition they will introduce you to the LUT's student life and show you around in the town centre. As the tutors are students themselves, they are not available for tutoring all the time. However, do not be discouraged to contact your tutor in case you have any questions later in the autumn, the tutors are happy to help you then also.
In case you have applied for LOAS housing but do not have housing starting from the beginning of your studies you can apply for temporary housing. Temporary housing is organised by LOAS and the Student Union LTKY. The students in temporary housing are living in LOAS common rooms on mattresses.
For more information on temporary housing and the application form please see https://ltky.fi/ website. The application can be found from the main page when the service is available.
It is recommended that you open a bank account in Finland as your stay will be rather long. A Finnish bank account will make your everyday life a bit easier. Opening a bank account is easy to arrange and free of charge. Students who have a Finnish bank account can use a Finnish ATM card to withdraw cash from ATMs and pay bills on the Internet. However, the banks usually give internet access codes only if the study period exceeds 6 months. Most money transfers in Finland are made via the internet, and this is also the cheapest way of paying bills. Cheques are not used in ordinary banking.
You will be given more information on opening a bank account during the Orientation days.
All students who are enrolled to LUT for more than 3 months must join the Student Union and pay the Student Union membership fee of 65€ per semester or 125 € per academic year. Once the membership fee is paid you can order the Frank student card through https://myfrank.fi/en/studentcard/. It is desirable to order the card immediately after you have paid the Student Union fee. You can ask your tutor to help with that. The card itself costs 15,10 €. With the student card you are entitled to numerous discounts including student priced meals at the campus restaurants, train ticket discounts and discounts in several stores. With the student card you are also entitled to use the Student Health Service FSHS (YTHS in Finnish).
Please note that it is not possible to receive your student card before you arrive in Lappeenranta and start your studies.
