The Universities Act (558/2009) gives provisions on the normative duration of studies for degrees. The duration of the right to study is limited for students who have obtained their right to study on 1 August 2005 or subsequently. The duration of the study right starts from the beginning of the month in which the study right was received.

According to legislation, the durations for studies for LUT degrees are the following:

  • Students admitted to complete both the degrees of Bachelor of Science (Technology) (180 ECTS credits) and Master of Science (Technology) (120 ECTS credits) in total seven academic years
  • Students admitted to complete only the degree of Master of Science (Technology) (120 ECTS credits) in total four academic years
  • Students admitted to complete both the degrees of Bachelor of Science (Economics and Business Administration) (180 ECTS credits) and Master of Science (Economics and Business Administration) (120 ECTS credits) in total seven academic years
  • Students admitted to complete only the degree of Master of Science (Economics and Business Administration) (120 ECTS credits) in total four academic years

In addition to the duration limits above, the students who have started their studies before 1.8.2015 may enrol as non-attending for a maximum of two academic years (=four semesters) and students who have started their studies after 1.8.2015 for a maximum of one academic year (=two semesters) without it being included in the duration of the studies. Students may enrol as non-attending for a longer period, but only the above mentioned semesters are accepted to extend the duration of the study right.

The study right is automatically extended based on semesters of non-attendance in the student register in connection with enrolment for the academic year. For example, if you register as non-attending for one semester, your study right will automatically be extended by one semester in your student records. In other words, you can see the current expiration date of your study right in WebOodi.

The semesters of non-attendance have an influence only when you are studying in your normative study time for a degree. If the student is studying on an extended study right, the extension will go on even though the student enrol as non-attending.
