Solar power plant

One of the largest solar power plants in Finland has been built on the Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) campus. The 210 kW solar power plant is part of LUT's Green Campus, which includes a 20 kW wind turbine, a smart power grid and electric vehicles. The power plant's crystalline silicon solar panels are placed in the front yard of the university and on campus buildings, covering an area of approximately 1,500 square metres.

In 2014, electricity consumption at LUT totalled 6 662 MWh. The new solar power plant will generate approximately 3-4% of universitys electricity/year. The electricity generated by all the solar panels replaces purchased electricity. Some of the solar panels will be fitted with a tracker, which will angle the panels toward the sun. The trackers will increase the amount of energy collected in the summer by 20-40%.

Wind turbine

The 20-kilowatt wind turbine tower is 30 metres high and the rotor diameter is 12 metres. The wind turbine will rise up on the shore in the Tervahaudanpuisto park, on the highest spot of the vicinity.

The university's own wind turbine will provide researchers with a genuine research instrument and actual conditions of use. The wind turbine will become a modern product development laboratory that is well suited for research, practice and student assignments both in Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) as in Saimaa University of Applied Sciences (Saimia).
